Private schools in Ireland can be found in all regions but the majority are in and around the Dublin area.

Like other private schools around the world, the schools have small classes; some may have only 20 or so pupils. This means there is more contact between the teachers and the students which is great for two reasons. One being that students can ask their teacher for help at any time, maybe to ask about an assignment, exams or homework. They can know that the teacher will have time for them and give him detailed and accurate help. The second reason being that the teacher can understand the student's individual strengths and weaknesses and help them to develop them.

Also by having smaller classes, teachers can closely monitor the progress of the students and at the end of the year they will be able to clarify what areas still need work in order to pass the exams. As private schools are not funded by the government, the students do not complete national exams. Instead, students complete the private schools own exam which will need to be passed in order to succeed to the next year.

In Ireland, there are many different types of private schools available. For example, parents can send their children to a single sex schools, so all boys or all girls. They can also send their children to "co-ed" schools, which mean that both sexes are taught together. Parents can also send their children to a religious private school which are gradually becoming more and more popular. Religious is of significant importance to some families, so it is nice to have the option to send their children to a religious private school.

Private schools in Ireland also provide an education for students with special needs. When searching for a school, parents will need to note if their children have any special need and then they will be able to see if the school can help them.

Ireland also has international private schools which are popular with international students who want help with their English language skills. They offer the International Baccalaureate (IB) which will be needed to receive an international education.
