Admissions

Private schools have the opportunity to select their students that they want to attend the school to study with them. This is different to public schools where any student can attend the school and obtain their education. Public schools are also funded by the government, whereas private schools are not so they can therefore select the students that they want.

There is a process that private schools have to follow to carefully select the students that will be studying with them. This is in order to choose the right student who will benefit the most and also to ensure that the school will bring the best in the students. The school should want to make the students perform at their best at all times and want to improve on a daily basis in order to succeed.

Some schools may differ in how they recruit new students but listed below are the following procedures that may happen.

Students will be required to fill out a test which will test them on a variety of topics. This could verbal reasoning or an English test such as writing an essay about a subject and then grammar, spelling and content will be tested. A maths test may also be used to test their mathematical skills and in some cases a non verbal reasoning may be used. This will test patterns and predicting what may follow which could become a useful skill when studying at school. Some schools may choose to include a science test or general knowledge test to examine their knowledge and other skills. It is up to the schools discretion on which areas they choose to test and most tests will differ from school to school around the country.

In some schools an interview may be carried out between the headteacher and the student. People can perform differently in an oral exam and a written test. Some may feel more confident in one area compared to another. This is why it is a good thing to test both areas and see how they average between them. In the interview, questions will be asked about any topics, it could be favourite holiday destinations or even current affairs. Students will be marked on their answers and how well they answer them. If you do well and please the headteacher then they will have a chance of being admitted into the school.

In the majority of cases, students will have to perform well in both areas in order to gain a place at the school. However, if a student has performed really well in one area and maybe not in one then the teacher can decide if they are allowed in or not. Students could be called back if necessary.

When they have decided, students will be contacted either through the post or by email that they have successfully been chosen to study at the school.
